Grooming

History
Originating as a true breed on the Shetland Islands north of Scotland, the "Sheltie" has been known for over 130 years. It is a relative of larger Scottish collie dogs.
Positives
The breed is a good watch dog and stock guardian, and is especially watchful of children. They make a loving, gentle family dog.
Negatives
The breed may be reserved with strangers, but not to the point of showing fear. Additionally their coat needs regular, thorough brushing, so owners must be prepared for this.
Conclusion: The reserved nature of the breed is in fact quite evident should you go to the residence of a breeder to inspect a litter of puppies. Reservation however can be mistaken for timidness - however the breed is not timid. They are fiercely loyal to their family and do make good stock guardians - especially of smaller types of stock. When you remember they are a smaller version of the Collie, and the Collie is known for holding its ground against predators, you can gain a better insight into the breed's stock guardian tendencies.
